Blue is a male yellow lab that belongs to my art mentor and friend, Jamie McMahan.  He loves to bring me one of Jamie's golf shoes and sit at my feet to be petted the full duration of our visit. Jamie is a great teacher and a beautiful portraiture artist.  I've learned so much about painting from him over the years, and Blue has been there every step of the way.

"Boudreux"

acrylic on canvas

sold

Boudreux also known as Buddy is a Newfoundland mix abandoned by his owner after he went to jail.  Left tied up outside without adequate shelter, concerned neighbors reported him when they discovered icicles hanging from his body.  Someone from Sunny Meadows Safe Haven just happened to be at the pound and decided to take him to their shelter's location.  Boudreux's sweet nature made him a perfect ambassador for Sunny Meadows visiting Red Bird's games, children's parties and adoption days.  Because of his size and age he was never adopted until the wonderful Cox family decided it was time for Boudreux to have a real family and home.  Boudreux's painting was a Christmas present to Lori from Jim who fondly refers to him as their big, sweet baby whose greatest joy in life is a ride in the car.

"Brutus"

acrylic on canvas

24 x 36

I enjoy painting dogs with long legs and lean bodies.  They pose so beautifully and seem to know they possess that regal flair.  Brutus is another one of my favorite breeds with his brindle coat and large, expressive eyes.  I think you can tell he's modeled before.

"Caesar"

acrylic on canvas

30 x 24

Sold

As this rottweiler reclined upon his plush, royal throne, the name Caesar seemed to fit this painting.  With intense eyes, his regal attention is forever focused on ruling his surroundings and protecting those inside his castle.  At times, public opinion has given this breed a questionable reputation, but, those that love it, know the rottweiler as a strong, beautiful, loyal and gentle dog.  Even a human who only knew life being caged, chained, unattended, denied love and companionship, would eventually prove to be a dangerous animal.

Clancy is a bearded collie and was commissioned as a Christmas present by Diana Stephens for her husband, Jody. Clancy has the sweetest disposition and face.  Some paintings are a true pleasure to paint and Clancy was one of them.

"Falstaff"

This painting was a commission for Matt LeJeune as a birthday present from his dad.  Falstaff, a large male Doberman was one handsome dog and even though he's twelve years old with his eye sight slowly leaving him, his devotion and protection towards Matt was a job he still took very seriously.  Falstaff's personality is somewhat stoic but sweet natured and that's what I wanted to capture in his portrait.  Falstaff and Matt now live in Atlanta, GA

"Gretchen"

acrylic on canvas

30 x 30

We have had about 4 golden retrievers in our family.  They are such a wonderful breed and good with children.  Gretchen has the most expressive face and loved to make you look at her every move.  All our female dogs think they are really little girls.

"Harley"

acrylic on canvas

12 x 16

sold

This painting of Harley was a Christmas present commissioned by Bill and Debbie Taylor for daughter, Laurie.  Harley, a five, year old golden retriever, is a beautiful dog with a sweet and gentle personality.  Laurie sent me many pictures from which to paint Harley, each displaying a face that actually knew to smile into the camera.  Most dogs won't make eye contact with a camera, but not Harley, his big grins made doing his portrait a lot of fun.

While looking on the website, www.petfinder.com, Kym Snipes found two female puppies that she thought she and her family just had to have.  A Twenty hour road trip later to Mount Airy, NC, Kym found herself loading the front seat with the precious cargo and heading back to Memphis for the sisters to meet their new family.  A  gorgeous, yellow beige combination of Visla and poodle, now known as Visladoodle, Latte and Mocha arrived at their new home eagerly ready to explore their new surroundings.  Shawn and Kym commissioned this painting of Latte and Mocha for their youngest son, Chadwick's 5th birthday.  Now for most 5 year olds, a painting for their birthday would be boring, but like his brother Chandler, Chadwick has grown up enjoying and appreciating a love for art.

"Max"

Max is a 5 year old silver and black German Shepherd who lives in Nashville, Tennessee. When he just a few months old, he became a college graduation present for Shelby Pannell who had just graduated from William & Mary. Her parents Lou and Wink Hoover thought Max would not only make a great companion for Shelby but Max has been a wonderful roommate, but somewhere along the way he decided he's a human and not a dog.

"Gunther"

Even though I've never owned a Rottweiler, I've always enjoyed painting them.  The combination of a huge, muscular body and a playful, happy face is how I think of this gentle giant.  Having been commissioned to paint numerous rottweilers, I can truly say their families are among the most loyal dog owners I've ever met.  Most say they never had or will ever have any other breed.  When I look at a face like Gunther, I can see the reason for their devotion.

"Gunther" is in the private collection of Dean Gresko, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

"Turbo"

mixed media

36 x 36

unframed

gallery wrap

We have a greyhound race track just across the river from Memphis in West Memphis, Arkansas.  Needless to say, once a greyhound's racing days are over, it's the huge job of many greyhound rescue volunteers to get them adopted into wonderful homes.  There was good news for Turbo, he found one. This has been a pretty successful painting winning a People's choice award and the Golden Artist Colors award.
